Many data centers today leverage both Windows and Linux to support the backbone of their business. Historically, however, different platforms meant silos of workloads, fragmented blocks of information, and inefficient utilization of IT resources. With energy prices soaring and budget reductions on the rise, resource optimization is a critical strategy on the minds of Technology professionals today.

Until recently, the burden of interoperability has rested on the shoulders of the IT professional. With the collaboration between Microsoft and Novell, however, this is no longer the case. Working jointly at their lab in Cambridge, Massachussetts, the companies are delivering solutions that bring Windows and Linux closer together in order to improve operational efficiency for the data center.

In this session, Jose Thomas from Microsoft and Frank Rego from Novell will discuss the joint collaboration around mixed-source virtualization between Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Novell's Xen Hypervisor for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. They will walk through an overview of the technology, discuss a number of offerings in the market with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server preconfigured as an optimized guest on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, share insights into how mixed-source virtualization can help improve operational efficiency, and speak briefly on the work being done to help manage these environments.

Last, the audience will learn how to take advantage of the Microsoft- Novell offering which includes subscription certificates and joint support for customers using both Windows and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
